Tall Ships Road Closures and Restrictions

NEWCASTLE

The following tables show the proposed road closures that are necessary to ensure a safe event for all people attending whilst minimising disruption to all stakeholders living and working in the area.

The various colours represent the level of restriction on the roads:

• Green roads are open to all vehicles.
• Orange roads are only open to authorised permit holders*
• Blue roads are closed to all vehicles.

*Vehicle Access permits will be distributed to residents and businesses to access premises when the roads are in the orange state and can be obtained by contacting the Tall Ships Traffic Office on 0191 277 7108 or by e-mailing tallshipstraffic@newcastle.gov.uk.

The Tyne Bridge and the CME south of the Swan House will be closed for approximately 2 hours from 21:30 on Wednesday 27th July.

The Eastern footpath of the Tyne Bridge will be closed to pedestrians from 00:00 on Monday 25th July to 17:00 on Thursday 28th July however the Western footpath will remain open at all times except between 21:30 and 23:30 on Wednesday 28th July.

Parking:

All city council car parks in Newcastle will be open 24 hours per day for the duration of the event.

All on street parking will be suspended on Quayside, Broad Chare, King Street, Quayside West, Watergate and Lombard Street however there will be on street permit parking available up until 17:00 on Dean Street, Akenside Hill and Queen Street.

The following car parks will be closed to the public for the duration of the event:

GATESHEAD

Due to the huge number of visitors expected for this month's Tall Ships event, a number of roads in the Gateshead Quays area will be temporarily closed to improve safety for visitors.

Road closures will be in place from 10am on Monday 25th July until 11pm on Thursday 28 July on the following routes:

* Swing Bridge

* South Shore Road/Hillgate (between Bridge Street and Mill

Road)

* Bottle Bank (between Tyne Bridge and entrance to Hilton

Hotel)

* Pipewellgate (between Bridge Street and Pipewellgate car

park)

Access will be retained for permit holders such as emergency services, event control staff, local residents and essential operational vehicles. In addition, the bus lane on Bottle Bank will remain open for buses and taxis only.

The following car parks will also be closed for the duration of the Tall Ships event:

* Pipewellgate

* South Shore Road

* Mill Road

* Baltic car park (restricted access)

* Church Street car park (restricted access)

The Hilton Hotel, properties on Church Street and the Church Street car park will all be accessible from Oakwellgate, Cannon Street and Church Street as appropriate.

Signed diversion routes will be in operation.

QuayLink Service:

A free Quaylink service will operate in the run up to and during the Tall Ships event between Newcastle City Centre and the Guildhall and between Gateshead interchange and the Sage Gateshead and the Baltic Centre for Contemporary Art.

The route in Newcastle will begin at the Haymarket bus station and also pick up on Market Street adjacent to the Central arcade before travelling down to the Quayside and dropping off and picking up outside of the Guildhall and then returning to the Haymarket via Market Street.

The route in Gateshead will be from the interchange to Sage gateshead before continuing to the Baltic centre for contemporary art before returning to the interchange.

The timings for this service are as follows:

Friday 22 – Saturday 23 July
Q1 Gateshead Interchange – the Sage Gateshead – BALTIC Square
Every 10 minutes between 0830 – 1800 (from 1400 - 1800 on Friday)
Every 20 minutes between 1800 - 2300

Q2 Haymarket – Theatre Royal – Quayside
Every 10 minutes between 0830 – 1800 (from 1400 - 1800 on Friday)
Every 20 minutes between 1800 - 2300

Sunday 24 July
Q1 Gateshead Interchange – the Sage Gateshead – BALTIC Square
Every 10 minutes between 1100 – 1800
Every 20 minutes between 1800 - 2300

Q2 Haymarket – Theatre Royal – Quayside
Every 10 minutes between 1100 – 1800
Every 20 minutes between 1800 - 2300
