Norwich Union British Grand Prix

When: 11/06/2006

See some of the top track and field athletes compete at Gateshead International Stadium including the long-awaited sprint showdown between the two fastest men in the world.

This event incorporates the NewcastleGateshead Challenge Finals: local grass roots athletics development initiative and the long-awaited sprint showdown between the two fastest men in the world.

World 100m record holder Asafa Powell has confirmed he will run at the meeting, joining world and Olympic champion Justin Gatlin. This is the biggest 100m race at Gateshead International Stadium since Lewis v Christie back in 1993.

There is no other scheduled meeting between the pair before Gateshead, so by the time Sunday 11 June comes around it will be more than a year since they both have finished in the same race.

The head-to-head encounter at Gateshead takes on an even greater significance after the pair recorded identical times in different races in the last few weeks. Gatlin clocked 9.95 seconds in Japan, the fastest 100m in the world this year, and that was matched by Powell who was competing in Jamaica on the same day.

A host of other international medallists will be competing as this world class event which returns to the North East for the first time since 2004.

Tickets for the Norwich Union British Grand Prix, priced between £5 and £14, on Sunday 11 June at Gateshead International Stadium, are available by phone on 0870 402 8000 or online at www.ukathletics.net
